From a 1930's recipe where the baker's neighbor got murdered, now repopularized on reddit under a name you can't forget! This recipe is updated with more common ingredients.

Steps
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
- Combine sugar, butter, molasses and egg with an electric beater.
- In a separate bowl, sift together dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice).
- Mix in parts of the dry ingredients and milk into the first bowl, in about thirds.
- Scoop batter by 1 tablespoon (slightly overflowing) onto cookie sheet lined with parchment paper
- Bake for 10-12 minutes.
- Remove from the oven. Let sit for 2 minutes. DO NOT let them sit longer
- Using heat-protected gloves, slide the cookies off of the cookie sheet by pinching one side of the porchment paper and tipping the sheet up and out. Cookies will be very soft and brittle; handle with care.
- Let sit another 10 minutes before serving.
Tips
- Full baking gloves (like Ove Gloves) are highly recommended for handling the cookie sheet and removing the cookies.
- It is very easy to overcook the bottoms of the cookies. Be strict on baking time; 12 minutes is often the absolute max. That's also why it's importart to slide the cookies off of the baking sheet soon after they're removed; keeping them on the hot cookie sheet can continue to cook them more than desired.
